A single mother of twins who got pregnant five months into her university programme has successfully graduated with two degrees.
The new degrees, a bachelors in cardiovascular sonography and a masters in health science are an addition to her already acquired bachelors in biology.
The 23-year-old mum identified as Montoya Major in a chat with TODAY Parents revealed how she got pregnant only five months into her programme at Nova Southeastern University.
Montoya had moved to Florida for the dual-degree programme but unexpectedly got pregnant.
“My initial thought, when I found out I was pregnant, was, ‘What am I going to do with a child?’” she said.

This made her studies really difficult as she was away from family and friends.
Montoya juggled her task as a mother with her task as a student, losing sleep at night and showing up for lectures still.
Speaking about her struggles, she said, “During that semester, I had one day that I was required to be in class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and like any new mum, I did not want to be away from my babies.”
She explained how she “physically felt and looked terrible. I had body aches and incision pain, not to mention the lack of sleep.”
Aside from academic and motherhood struggles, Montoya also suffered other challenges with a roommate in her off-campus apartment raising concerns about the babies crying.
Montoya thanked her twin daughters, her parents and friends for supporting her while announcing the successful completion of her programmes.
